Neurophysiology

Neurophysiology is the combined study of the brain, spinal cord, nerve, and muscle functions. A test may be requested to assess your symptoms to provide your physician with important information or diagnosis and treatment. These tests are requested for a range of neurological conditions like carpal tunnel syndrome, peripheral neuropathy, myopathy, and epilepsy.

The test will be performed by a technician or the Neurologist, using specialised equipment. The Neurologist will assess the results, generating a report that can be passed on to your referring doctor.

Generally, there are no significant side effects due to the nature of the test. If there are any possible side effects, our professionals will be sure to inform you. You will be advised of the expected test duration prior to your appointment.

Neurophysiology tests include:

  • Electroencephalography (EEG)
  • Nerve Conduction Studies (NCS)
  • Electromyography (EMG)

Preparation

Unless indicated otherwise, eat and take regular medications as normal on the day of the test. Please avoid hairspray, gel and skin lotion for all tests. If the test is for children, wheelchair bound or special needs people, please ensure you inform us well in advance as considerations may need to be made for their management. Should you need to cancel or reschedule your appointment, please contact our staff immediately to arrange an alternative appointment.
